Biography

Dr Marie Coggins, BSc (Hons) Environ. Science and Technology, MSc (Environ. Chemistry), PhD (Physics). She is a lecturer at the School of Physics, NUIG and a member of the Health from Environment group at the Ryan Institute, NUIG. She has extensive experience of exposure science research, and has worked in research, industry and academia. She was PI on EPA STRIVE project, Indoor Air Pollution and Health (2008-EH-MS-8-S3; www.nuigalway.ie/iapah), EPA STRIVE/SEAI EPA2009-SS-74 and EPA2012-EH-PhD-10. Currently she is leading 4 work-packages on the  EPA research project ELEVATE,  Elucidating Levels and Pathways of Human Exposure in Ireland to POP-BFRs and PFOS (ELEVATE)  http://www.nuigalway.ie/elevate/ .
She has secured over 1 million euro’s in research funding as PI or co applicant from agencies such the Irish Commissioners for Public Works, Science Foundation Ireland and EPA. Her work has been cited over 362 times, and she has 43 journal, conference abstract and research reports.  She has held the role of Academic Director of 2 successful postgraduate programmes, MSc  Occupational and Environmental Health & Safety  in the College of Science, NUIG for almost six years http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/taught-postgraduate-courses/occupational-environmental-health-safety. She has been involved in the development and delivery of chemical risk assessment training courses with the Health and Safety unit of IBEC, Irish Chemical and Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Federation, National Irish Safety Organization and Occupational Hygiene Society of Ireland (OHSI). She is a chartered member of the British Occupational Hygiene Society, a member of the International Occupational Hygiene Society.

Research Interests

Her research interests include measurement of environmental and occupational hazards.

Dr Coggins is  Academic Director for the MSc and HDip Occupational Health and Safety programmes (part-time and full-time)  http://www.nuigalway.ie/courses/taught-postgraduate-courses/occupational-health-safety.html. She teaches PH317 Occupational Hygiene and PH341 Measurement of health hazards at work. She also teaches EP505 Occupational Hygiene a postgraduate course on the MSc and HDip Occupational Health and Safety programmes.
